We're All A Little Flakey...

Writer: Vashti VerschoorVashti Verschoor

...a little broken. Ok, maybe a lot broken! But I believe that we still all have purpose.

One of the things I love most about painting on old, used, forgotten things is the idea of redemption. "I once was lost, but now I'm found" often runs through my head as I create. Gathering my "canvases" together, from shipping pallets to old, cracking frames, I think about what these things were originally built to do? Carry heavy loads? Hold beauty and display perfection? And now they are being thrown away after so many years of service.

I know you can see where I'm going with this.. I'm not known for being subtle; heavy on my metaphor, but not subtle..lol..

I have to admit, I'm having a really hard time with our current trend of "cancel culture". If life is a "journey" then we have to allow for a person's moving from one place to another. We have to allow that they took a wrong turn and then recalculated, adjusted their course and moved forward. This is "honest". This is "truth". Not two-faced or false...

When re-purposing these old pieces, after removing the debris and dirt, I intentionally find ways of incorporating the broken, flakey, and stained areas into the art. These works of art would not be the same without them, just as You and I would not be the same without our flakey brokeness.

There is such beauty in redemption.

You have purpose. I'm proud of you for recalculating, and moving forward!
